The Karnataka government has greenlit an ambitious project to build a world-class cricket stadium in Suryacity, Bommasandra, with a seating capacity of 80,000. This new venue will rank as India’s second-largest cricket stadium, trailing only the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

₹1,650-Crore Integrated Sports Hub
The stadium is a key component of a 100-acre integrated sports complex, spearheaded by the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) with a budget of ₹1,650 crore. This development addresses growing concerns about the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru’s current cricket hub, which has a limited capacity of 32,000 and faced safety issues following a tragic stampede during IPL celebrations earlier this year, resulting in 11 fatalities.
A Multi-Sport Destination
The Suryacity Sports Complex will extend beyond cricket, offering a range of world-class facilities:
- 8 indoor and 8 outdoor sports arenas for diverse athletic events
- High-performance gyms and training facilities to support elite athletes
- An Olympic-sized swimming pool for aquatic sports
- Hotels and hospitality spaces to accommodate visitors
- A multi-purpose international-standard events hall for global sporting and cultural events
New Home for RCB and International Cricket
Upon completion, the stadium will serve as the new home ground for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is also expected to host major international cricket matches, positioning Bengaluru as a premier global sporting destination.
Construction Timeline
While the exact start date for construction remains undisclosed, officials indicate that work will commence soon, with a goal to complete the stadium within the next few years.
This transformative project promises to elevate Bengaluru’s status in the global sports arena, offering state-of-the-art facilities for athletes and fans alike.
