Indian cricketer Hanuma Vihari has decided to start a new journey in domestic cricket by joining the Tripura Cricket Association. He will represent Tripura across formats in the upcoming 2025-26 season, after securing a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Andhra Cricket Association.
Why the Move?
Vihari explained that he wanted more opportunities to play in all three formats. Andhra had indicated they were focusing on youngsters in white-ball cricket, which left him on the sidelines for both T20s and 50-over matches.
His contract with Tripura is for one season to begin with, and it can be extended later by mutual agreement.
Proven Performer
Vihari is one of the most dependable players in Indian domestic cricket. He has scored nearly 10,000 runs in first-class matches at an impressive average of almost 50. In List A cricket, he has over 3,500 runs, while in T20s he has more than 1,700 runs at a strike rate above 115.
Internationally, Vihari is remembered most for his gritty innings in the 2021 Sydney Test against Australia, where he batted through injury to help India secure a famous draw.
Recently, he also showed his form by finishing as Player of the Tournament in the Andhra Premier League.
A Difficult Goodbye to Andhra
The move ends a complicated few years with the Andhra team. In the 2023–24 Ranji season, Vihari stepped down as captain after alleging political interference and saying he felt “humiliated and embarrassed” by the way he was treated.
Although he stayed for one more season after being persuaded by political leaders, he has now chosen a fresh start with Tripura.
What This Means for Tripura
For Tripura, Vihari’s arrival is a big boost. The team has been looking to improve its standing in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
His experience, calm presence, and leadership are expected to strengthen the squad and inspire younger players.
Looking Forward
As he prepares for the new season, Vihari is eager to score runs and make a difference. “I want to score heaps of runs and help Tripura cricket flourish,” he said.
For the batter, it’s a chance to restart and prove his ability across formats. For Tripura, it’s an opportunity to learn and grow with one of India’s most consistent performers in the domestic game.
